Pleasing a picky eater
Do you have a fussy eater in the house? Does your child pick at the food on his or her plate? Or simply refuse to eat vegetables?

Many parents worry, become stressed and frustrated when they have to deal with picky eaters or children with a poor appetite. This is a common occurrence among children (usually a phase) however to support growth, it is important that children get nutrients, minerals and vitamins from food... Most times, fussy eating is a form of attention seeking – or an attempt to assert control. Children under the age of five years tend to be fussy about their food because at this stage of their lives they are becoming more independent and feel the need to exercise more control. Introducing new foods at an earlier stage, disguising the taste, and making mealtimes pleasant and fun can encourage and teach your child to enjoy food and also become a healthy eater. If your child’s eating habits affects their growth, weight or mood, consult your doctor.

The Natural Way
There are many practical ways to help and encourage children with poor appetites to eat. Firstly, do not force them to eat something that they do not want to – remove their plate and do not make an issue about it as this may affect them negatively in the long term. Encourage children to feed themselves from a young age. Experimenting and exploring food is very important and also helps them have a healthy attitude towards food. Make mealtimes a happy, social occasion by encouraging the whole family to sit down together at a table and not in front of the television! Cut vegetables and fruit into fun shapes or disguise foods with as sauce to entice children to eat.

What is Kiddie Florish?
While there are many children who are overweight, the opposite side of the coin is those children, especially younger children, who 'never' seem to eat. These children are typically very fussy with their food and have poor appetites. They frequently need to be begged or bribed to eat even the smallest morsel!

There is often a strong emotional and anxiety component and such children tend to have weak constitutions and are often withdrawn. The herbs in Kiddie Florish help to naturally strengthen the constitution, maintain healthy appetite and mood and promote the health of the nervous system.

Kiddie Florish is a safe and natural complex herbal remedy in a convenient liquid drop form. Easy to administer, Kiddie Florish may be diluted in water or juice or even a favorite snack. The dosage is easy to adjust for different ages.

How has Kiddie Florish helped other children?
“Ever since I can remember my eldest daughter, Sarah 9 years, has been a fussy eater who never seems to finish her food. No matter what I make for her she will have a couple of spoonfuls and then say she is no longer hungry. Although she is growing and is not particularly underweight for her age and height I just felt that she needed to eat better. She is getting more involved in sport now and I was worried that she wouldn’t be getting enough energy. I have been giving her Kiddie Florish for the last two months and there has definitely been an improvement. She will stay at the dinner table longer and eat more of her meal and we are arguing less and less about her eating. I can’t even begin to describe my sense of relief – as a parent feeling that you cannot feed your child properly is terribly distressing and really makes you feel inadequate. Thank you for helping us and I will continue to use Kiddie Florish for Sarah.”
- Pat Sutherland
I have been using Kiddie Florish for my 3 year old twins for 4 weeks now and what a difference already! There is definitely less fighting at mealtimes, as well as in between, and both of them are eating better. I have also tried some of your tips and advice and bran and carrot muffins are now a firm favourite, a great breakfast back up as well that I don’t feel too guilty about. Heartfelt thanks from a desperate mom”.

Ingredients:
Kiddie Florish contains the following carefully chosen herbal ingredients:
  • Emblica officinalis (Amalaki) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine and is traditionally known as a powerful rejuvenating herb. The fruit of Amalaki is reputed to be the highest natural source of Vitamin C in nature. It helps to naturally increase body mass by stimulating protein synthesis. In addition it has been shown to promote healthy metabolic function, blood cell production and digestion. Due to its high levels of Vitamin C, Amalaki is a powerful anti-oxidant, helping to protect the body against disease.
  • Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) - This herb is also called 'Indian ginseng' and is one of the most important Ayurvedic tonic herbs, recommended for maintaining growth, health, energy and stamina. Regular use can help to nourish the blood and maintain healthy haemoglobin levels, ensuring oxygen supply throughout the body. Withania is also an excellent mood tonic with gentle calming properties. Combined with ginger, its tonic effects are increased. This herb is often recommended as a tonic to assist with recovery after illness.
  • Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) - This herb has an ancient history of both culinary and medicinal use. It has traditionally been used as an appetite stimulant, and recent research indicates a role in natural steroid production, the hormones that drive the growth process. In addition, Trigonella helps to support healthy digestive systems as well as to maintain healthy levels of glucose and cholesterol in the blood.
  • Scutellaria lateriflora (Skullcap) - This herb is native to North America but is now well known world wide as a relaxing nerve tonic with an excellent calming effect, especially for excitable, sensitive or highly strung children.
  • Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) has been used since ancient times in Asian, Arabic and Indian herbal traditions. It has been shown to stimulate the intestines and salivary juices and to increase appetite. Ginger has also been shown to be a very useful herb in the maintenance of healthy digestion. Regular use helps to boost the immune system and has a positive effect on heart and circulatory health.
  • Borago officinalis (Borage) has a restorative and tonic effect on the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing the hormones involved in our reactions to stress as well as the growth process. Borage also has a long history of use as a tonic for the digestive system and is an excellent remedy to assist in the recovery from illness.

Information on Childhood Nutrition

Please note that this information is offered for educational purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical attention. When in doubt, please consult your health practitioner.

Proper nutrition is one of the most important influences on your youngster's well-being. A varied, balanced diet containing vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and even some fat, promotes growth, energy and overall health.
When your child won’t eat
Many parents are concerned that their children are not eating properly. Some children go through a stage of disinterest in food and eating and this is understandably worrying for parents, as proper nutrition is essential for normal growth and development. While children's appetites may vary naturally depending on their growth needs, there are some children who have an uneasy relationship with food. This is often associated with stress and conflict around mealtimes as worried parents try to encourage their children to eat.

As the rate of growth slows down in older toddlers, they often do start to become picky eaters as their nutrition requirements may be slightly decreased. It is also important to remember that developing a picky appetite is an important way for your child to assert his/her independence at this age.

Most children will grow out of this stage and continue to grow and develop completely normally, naturally developing more balanced eating habits and hearty appetites.

If you are concerned that your child is not growing appropriately or is losing weight please consult your health care practitioner.

Learning healthy habits
Our food preferences are developed early in life and, once they are established, they are hard to break. Therefore, the earlier you encourage healthy food choices for your child, the better.

The example set at home is an important determinant of future food choices as your child watches you for clues on likes, dislikes and choices. However, as children spend many hours a day away from home, in school and with friends, a variety of social and other factors influence what and when children eat. A major influence on children is television advertising, which often promotes unhealthy food selections.

Much emphasis is placed on the need for 3 balanced meals per day. It is important to keep this in perspective. Although it is ideal to provide 3 balanced meals per day, we all have good days and bad days for eating and appetites can vary, even from day to day, depending on factors like activity levels. As long as your child’s overall weekly diet is healthy and balanced, you don’t need to get too hung up on analyzing each individual meal.

Mealtimes can also become emotional battlegrounds. If you feel that this applies to yourself and your child, do not hesitate to seek professional help. Parent counseling can go a long way to solving the problem. Ignoring emotional problems around food can have far reaching effects on your child's future relationship with food, increasing the risk of anorexia nervosa, bulimia and other eating disorders later in life.

Practical and helpful hints on feeding your picky eater
For toddlers:
  • Get your child involved in choosing food in the shop - e.g. 'Would you like oranges or mangoes?'
  • Get creative and make meal and snack times fun! Cut bread into shapes, arrange carrots, tomatoes, etc to look like a face, offer healthy dips like yoghurt for finger foods, fun and lively placemats, crockery, cutlery, etc.
  • Take your child on a fun outing to the source of foods. Visit dairy farms, orchards, etc. While young children may not fully understand the concept, it may make them excited enough to try a new product or retry something previously given.
  • Fruit juice is healthy and 100% pure fruit juice is far better than flavoured or artificial drinks. However, be aware that commercially prepared 'natural' fruit juices contain fructose - or fruit sugars - and may be just as harmful on the teeth as sugar. The high caloric value of commercial fruit juices also reduces your child's appetite for food. The solution is to make the juices from fresh fruit at home and to offer after meals rather than before. If you must use store bought fruit juices, dilute at least 50% in water and remember the damage that can be done to teeth by a bottle or sippy cup being clung to all day!
  • Make smoothies with fresh fruit, milk or yoghurt. Even frozen and tinned fruit can be used if necessary. Children who dislike the texture of smoothies may enjoy ice lollies made from the mixture.
  • Adding boiled egg white to smoothies will increase the protein content but the taste is undetectable.
  • Bran or oat muffins will often be regarded as “cake”, yet they are a good source of grains and fibre. Use them as a vehicle for fruit and vegetables by adding in bananas, carrots, blueberries, zucchini, etc.
  • Fortify favorite foods with extra vegetables or fruit but try and be up front about it if asked. You don’t want your child to find out later and then have a full scale rebellion on your hands!
  • Allow toddlers to feed themselves as much as possible with finger foods.
  • Set a good example and young children will ultimately follow. Try to eat a good balanced diet and eat together as a family. This is much more fun for toddlers than eating alone!
  • FUN! Most importantly keep mealtimes and food fun. Too much pressure and emphasis on eating can have the opposite effect and can result in negative feelings towards food. Treats are great too – just not everyday as substitutes for healthy eating.

For older children:

  • Avoid turning meals into a power struggle – it usually doesn’t help and makes your child more resistant to eating.
  • Try and stick to regular meal and snack times and try to eat at least one meal together as a family per day.
  • Offer liquids such as juice (see above) after the meal rather than before or during the meal
  • Try to avoid junk foods as they are high in calories but have low nutritional value. Just one small nibble of junk food can completely destroy the appetite of a picky eater!
  • Use peanut butter (about 100 calories / tablespoon) as a spread or topping.
  • Speak to your child and try to establish likes and dislikes. We all have preferences and allowing some choice helps children to feel more in control of their diet.
  • Avoid eating in front of the television. Family meals in front of the TV on occasion will do no harm. However, eating regularly in front of the TV is distracting and often results in picky eaters eating less.

Finally a word of encouragement! Remember that, while we all worry about what our children eat, they are usually taking in more than we give them credit for. Many children who 'never' seem to eat maintain normal growth patterns when plotted on a growth chart and are healthy and full of energy. However, if you are at all concerned about your child's weight or growth, please be sure to consult your health care practitioner.
