Q: What is the third stage of labour?

The third stage of labour takes place soon after you have delivered your new baby and involves the delivery of the placenta and membranes which have been nourishing and protecting your unborn child for the last 9 months.
The third stage is the shortest stage of labour and generally lasts only 15-20 minutes. Contractions will be weaker and labour pains not as severe as the previous stages. Exhaustion is the most common problem! The excitement of holding the new baby often eases women through the delivery of the placenta, although many find that they are tired out by the time the baby has been born and find it difficult to summon up the energy to deliver the placenta.

Q: Can I begin breastfeeding before the third stage is over?
