An Abundant Supply...
Deciding whether to breastfeed your baby is an important decision as it will dictate your routine once the baby is born and will affect your child’s health in the future. New mothers want to give their babies the very best of everything and breast milk can’t be beaten as a perfect first food for your child.

Modern research has shown that breast milk is the perfect nourishment for babies as it not only contains all the nutritional requirements in ideal proportions, but also provides protection from disease and illness in the form of antibodies from the mother’s own immune system. Babies who have been breast-fed have been shown to be healthier and have fewer infections, allergies, general medical problems and hospital admissions than those who are bottle (formula) fed. Breast-feeding is also a wonderful way to bond with and feel close to your new baby!

When Breastfeeding is a problem...
Nursing your infant does not always come as naturally and easily as one would hope and many women have difficulties with learning the art of breast-feeding. Sometimes it is technique that is a problem and a breast-feeding consultant is usually on hand at birthing centres to get you on the right track. However, new mothers often feel that they don’t have enough milk for their baby’s needs or that the milk is not flowing easily. This can become a distressing problem, especially when your child is hungry and suckling with all his/her might to no avail.

Many doctors prescribe certain varieties of synthetic antidepressants or digestive medicines to mothers trying to increase the production of milk, because they have the known side effect of increasing lactation. While these drugs can be effective, they have not been specifically formulated to increase lactation, which means that their use for this purpose has not been scientifically assessed. Besides the 'side effect' of increasing milk production, other side effects have been documented. It is therefore our opinion that the use of synthetic drugs, especially during nursing, needs to be carefully considered and researched before a decision is made - especially when there are safer alternatives!

The Natural Way
Most new mothers tend to worry about two factors when breastfeeding: increasing milk production and keeping the supply up. A good tip is to pump breast milk a half hour after a feed and every half hour thereafter – this will ‘trick’ the body into supplying milk more often – as nature has equipped the body to produce and replace the amount of milk your baby has taken (allowing you to store extra). Let your child breastfeed as often as he/she wants. Follow your baby’s lead - as breasts work on the law of supply and demand. Once your baby has fed frequently for a few days and your supply is up, the usual routine will return. Remember to keep healthy – as whatever mom eats and drinks – baby gets via breast milk too!

How has Nature’s Milk Drops helped others?
'I was very worried about whether I would be able to breastfeed successfully as I have seen how some of my friends with babies had to give up because their milk just didn’t seem to be enough. I know they always say to keep trying but I think it just became too frustrating and traumatic for them to see their babies hungry and not being able to feed them properly. I really wanted my son to have all the advantages of breastfeeding and decided to try your Nature’s Milk product. I was really thrilled with the results as I seemed to have a good supply of colostrum, and then milk, from the outset. The relief of being able to bond with my child in this special way without the anxiety and difficulties I was expecting was great. Thank you so much for a natural product that really works!'

Your Nature’s Milk remedy is fantastic- for the first few days after giving birth I had very little milk and was beginning to feel stressed out and desperate. My midwife recommended your product and within 48 hours my milk flow really took off! Thanks for such a great range of products that really help women like me!'

Nature’s Milk Drops contain the following proven herbal ingredients:
  • Galega officinalis is a naturopathic “galactogogue” which encourages both the beginning of milk production after childbirth as well as increasing total milk volume. This ingredient is also good for balancing blood sugar and may therefore also be of particular use to women with diabetes or insulin resistance.
  • Silybum marianus (Milk Thistle) has been used since ancient times for treating a variety of ailments and is most widely known for its positive effects on liver functioning and breast-feeding. Milk Thistle is excellent for promoting the production of breastmilk in nursing mothers and, due to its liver tonic properties, has also been shown to reduce the amounts of synthetic substances from the environment, like pollution and pesticides, in mothers’ milk.
  • Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) is one of the oldest medicinal herbs and has documented use in Ancient Egyptian history and Chinese Traditional Medicine. Fenugreek seed has been used to increase milk production since biblical times as it contains phytoestrogens, which are natural plant chemicals that mimic female hormones. Fenugreek has been clinically shown to increase a nursing mother's milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb.
  • Borago officinalis (Borage) is a soothing, anti-inflammatory herb excellent for women recovering from childbirth. It also stimulates the flow of breast milk and acts as a digestive tonic to prevent digestive problems such as constipation.

FAQ’s
Q: How do I know when my baby is getting enough milk?
A: For a few days after delivery you will produce only small amounts of a thin watery substance which is known as colostrum. Colostrum is crucial for your baby’s first meals even though it may seem to be a small amount. Once your mature milk comes in (on about the third day after birth), you can expect 4-6 wet disposable diapers (One or two more if you use cloth diapers.) and 3 or 4 bowel movements in 24 hours. This will usually show that your baby is getting a perfectly adequate volume of milk.

Q: Can I fall pregnant while I am breastfeeding?
A: Even though fertility is decreased and you may not even be menstruating, there is still a possibility of conceiving while breast-feeding. For many parents with a brand new little one in the house, falling pregnant again so soon is unthinkable! For these parents, it is important to use a reliable method of birth control from the very first time you resume sexual intercourse.

Of course, if you and your partner feel ready to conceive again then no form of contraception is necessary.

Q: Can I practice a combination of breast-feeding and formula feeding?
A: Some women would love to breast-feed exclusively but for some reason are unable to do this. There are a number of options for mothers who work or are separated from their infant regularly. You may be able to express or “pump” milk and store it in a bottle for later feeding. Otherwise, combination feeding of both breast milk and formula is also a possibility. Although your baby will not receive 100% of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, this method still has great advantages over formula feeding only. If you decide to practise combination feeding during the first few months, this may decrease milk production as your body will 'notice' that the demand for milk is less. Regular use of Nature's Birth Drops during this time will help to keep your milk production up.

Q: My breasts hurt. What is wrong and what can I do about it?
A: Painful breasts can occur amongst breast-feeding moms for one of several reasons. Mastitis (infection of the breast) will cause pain, swelling, redness and warmth of the breast and should be seen to by your health care provider as soon as possible. Breasts may also become sore and tender when the flow of milk is blocked and the breast becomes engorged. Sometimes the breasts may become tender after illness, when you’re under stress or very busy, or for no apparent reason at all. This often happens during the early days of breastfeeding while your body is still establishing how much breastfeeding will be needed. 'Demand feeding' your baby will help nature to work out how much milk you need to produce and this, in turn, should settle your milk supply and relieve fluctuations in milk production.

You can ease painful or tender breasts by expressing milk if they are engorged and your baby has had enough, having a hot shower, placing warm compresses on the breasts and massaging the breasts gently from under the arm to the nipple. Applying a raw cabbage leaf under a warm cloth to the breast is an 'old wives tale' or home remedy which also works very well!

What else can help?
  • If you are having trouble breastfeeding, firstly know that you are not alone. Breast-feeding is a skill to be learnt and doesn’t come naturally to many women. Problems with latching your baby, technique and milk volume are extremely common. A breast-feeding consultant will be able to help you with difficulties of technique and positioning as well as provide support, advice and encouragement.
  • If your milk supply seems low, perseverance is also key as the frequent suckling action of your baby nursing will actually stimulate your body to produce more milk.
  • Try to get as much rest as possible by sleeping when your baby is taking a nap. Make resting your priority and don’t worry too much about housework at this stage.
  • Paying attention to your diet and nutrition levels is especially important if you are breastfeeding. Eat plenty of fresh, nutritious and raw fruit and vegetables, sufficient good quality protein and healthy non-processed carbohydrates. Don't forget to drink at least 8 glasses of preferably filtered or natural spring water daily. Avoid caffeine, chocolate, excess sugar and alcohol.
  • The investment into getting it right will be worth it in terms of the future health of your child as well as the opportunity to create that special, deep bond with your baby.
